The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the government of carrying out what it describes as arbitrary arrests and prosecutions of its members, raising concerns over alleged political intimidation.
Addressing journalists at a press conference on Wednesday, April 15, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, expressed concern about the recent arrests, saying they threaten democratic principles and the rule of law.
He argued that the actions point to a pattern aimed at silencing opposition voices and intimidating party members through what he believes are weak or unjustified legal processes.
According to him, such developments risk eroding public confidence in Ghana’s justice system and could set a dangerous precedent in the country’s political landscape.
Frimpong cautioned that future governments may adopt similar approaches if the trend continues, stressing that political leaders must be mindful of the precedents they establish while in power.
He warned that a future NPP administration could respond in kind to members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), if the situation persists.
“Somewhere in 2025, this government was arresting, detaining and arbitrarily arraigning members of our party before some kangaroo courts,” he said.
“They are sidestepping our constitution and undermining the rule of law, liberty, and freedom of expression. We want to send a signal that no condition is permanent—the tables will turn.”
He added that the party does not wish for a situation where retaliatory actions become the norm but stressed that current developments could lead to such outcomes if not addressed.
