The suspect, identified as David Gyasi, popularly known as “Amowee,” was apprehended on Friday, May 29, 2026, after allegedly storming the palace armed with a cutlass while wearing a smock embedded with talismans.
According to a police statement issued on May 31, the Chief of Agona-Amenfi, Nana Kwaku Gyapong II, reported the incident to the Wassa Dominae District Police Command at approximately 1:50 p.m. The chief informed officers that the suspect had attacked a man identified as Lord Kwaku, inflicting a cut wound on his right wrist before chasing other individuals around the palace premises, causing fear and panic among residents.
Police officers were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they encountered a large crowd and a tense atmosphere. Despite repeated orders from law enforcement officers to surrender, the suspect reportedly refused and continued threatening people with the weapon. Officers eventually subdued, disarmed, and arrested him.
Both the suspect and the injured victim were transported to the Roman Catholic Hospital in Asankrangwa for medical treatment and are currently receiving care.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident occurred shortly after an official event led by Nana Kwaku Gyapong II. Earlier in the day, the chief had officiated a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a laboratory and theatre block at the Agona-Amenfi Health Centre. Lord Kwaku had reportedly been sent to retrieve a pickaxe from the palace when he was attacked near the entrance.
The Western Central Regional Police Command has assured residents of its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the area. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack are ongoing.
