President John Dramani Mahama says Ghana is shifting focus from stabilising the economy to creating jobs and improving livelihoods.
Speaking at the May Day celebrations in Accra, Mahama said his government has made progress in restoring economic stability and is now prioritising growth.
He explained that when his administration took office, the immediate goal was to stabilise the economy by strengthening the cedi, reducing inflation, lowering interest rates, and restoring fiscal discipline.
According to him, these efforts are beginning to show results, including improved investor confidence and reduced economic pressure.
However, Mahama stressed that stability alone is not enough.
“Stability is the foundation, but it is not the house,” he said, adding that the next step is to build a stronger, more inclusive economy.
He said the government is now aggressively pursuing policies that will expand the economy and create jobs, especially for young people. Key areas of focus include value addition and the digital economy.
The President also revealed that a new economic policy framework will soon be presented to Cabinet and Parliament, with plans to invest about one percent of Ghana’s GDP each year in sectors that can create jobs.
“Our mission is to turn stability into opportunity and improve the lives of Ghanaians,” he said.
