President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to construct a second gas processing plant to expand the country’s gas infrastructure and meet growing energy needs.
Speaking in Koforidua during his “Resetting Ghana Tour,” he said the new facility—Gas Processing Plant 2 (GPP2)—will complement the existing Atuabo Gas Processing Plant in the Ellembelle District.
According to the President, the Ghana National Gas Company Limited has already secured land for the project, following calls from civil society groups to expand processing capacity.
He explained that increased gas supply from ongoing investments makes the project necessary. “Jubilee partners are investing $2 billion to bring in more gas, and we have also signed a contract with ENI, which is investing $1.5 billion,” he said.
President Mahama noted that the current Atuabo plant will not be able to handle the expected volumes, making a second facility critical to process excess gas and supply power producers.
He added that Ghana’s power generation capacity could reach nearly 6,000 megawatts with the additional gas supply, ensuring stable electricity for the next 10 to 15 years.
The President also highlighted rising electricity demand, noting that peak consumption has increased from about 3,500 megawatts to 4,300 megawatts due to economic growth.
He stressed the need for long-term planning and redundancy in the energy sector, adding that surplus power could be exported to neighbouring countries such as Burkina Faso and Togo to generate foreign exchange.
